Educational Resource on Brazilian Arts and History

(Much more information on Brazilian arts and culture will be added to this page.)

What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art created by African slaves hundreds of years ago in colonial Brazil. Today capoeira has spread throughout the world and is highly respected for its unique combination of martial arts, dance, song, folklore, and philosophy.  To see what capoeira looks like please visit our
videos page.

What is Capoeira Regional?
Capoeira Regional is a particular style of capoeira that was created in the early 1900's by the legendary capoeirista Mestre Bimba.  Bimba created capoeira regional to be a faster paced, more acrobatic, and more combative art than the previous forms of capoeira.

What is Meculele?
Meculele developed on the sugar cane plantations during Brazil's colonial slave period.  This heavily African influenced art involves using a sugar cane stick and a machete in a rapidly rhythmic, combat-like, freestyle dance.

What is Batucada?
A fast-paced, high energy, Brazilian, percussive music style using multiple drums, snares, musical bows, bells, whistles, and shakers.  This style of music is often paired with Samba style dance and Brazilian celebrations/rituals.

Samba, Frevo, Dance-Afro, Portuguese language, instrument creation, singing, modern dance, Brazilian history and culture studies?
The CAF offers education in many of these arts through its related classes and fully supports all forms of Brazilian art.  It is our hope that the CAF may one day educate and entertain the public with the most diverse offering of Brazilian arts in the U.S.
